an interactive mass culture
These works represent yet another exploration of an experimental arts practice, yet this is a little different from that which I outlined previously. Specifically it relates to an attempt to ‘aim’ it at another subject which this time was the digitisation of our lives. There were however, issues with this exploration because the reality that communications media shows us has little to do with the material world, and in a sense it shows us a social reality. In these works therefore, there is confusion as get an understanding of the way that an experimental arts practice relates differently to social and a universal reality.
Because of this it is best just to understand these works as they would just attempt to capture an ontological experience with a digitised culture. This being said however, the earlier works do I feel capture little of a digitised world as this would relate to my own personal interface with it via an exploration of an experimental arts practice.
2008-11
The works in the gallery above represent the second half of an exploration into a digitised culture, and while the works can’t be said to be employing an experimental art practice, conceptually they are still in essence experiential ontology. These works can all loosely be seen as part of a series exploring my own personal interface with a digitised culture called ‘An Interactive Mass Culture’.
2005-07
The works in this gallery represent the first half of this exploration into a digitised culture. From a conceptual perspective they all explore the interface I had with the screen itself, and are all loosely part of a series called ‘Life on the Screen’.
2001-04
The works in this gallery are an exploration of the way that digital media was shaping our lives as this would relate to the way that we interact within and within it. In contrast to the works above these ones did not explore a digitised culture and instead just explored our digitised lives. Consequently, I did not have the issues here exploring an experimental arts practice that I had with the works above. These works in addition were made when I was on a research scholarship in Japan, and had access to new and interesting technology. The work ‘migratory bird’ in particular made using an early 3D printer that was one of only seven in the world at that time.
these works however, are only representative of those that i did in relation to an interactive mass culture. if you would like to view the archive then please click the button below.
